 Job Summary:

Plans, manages and supervises the activities of the centralized laboratory and performs standard biological, microbiological and chemical tests in all areas of medical laboratory to assure their delivery in an accurate and timely fashion using proper safety precautions. Responsible for performing clinical laboratory testing for all patient types in a timely, efficient and accurate manner in accordance with state, federal and other regulatory requirements. Performs maintenance, quality control and quality assurance for all testing performed in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and departmental policies and procedures. Is able to prioritize workload and demonstrate flexibility to meet customer and departmental needs. Actively participates in process improvement to enhance turnaround times and quality of test results utilizing decision making and troubleshooting skills.

Trains or supervises training of other lab staff.

Participates in planning services for other divisions within the facility.

Evaluates quality control and quality assurance statistics and modifies manuals as needed.

Develops a budget for the laboratory and maintains control of lab costs.

Enforces safety procedures and consults with other supervisors about these issues.

Effectively communicates and demonstrates good customer service throughout the health system to include nursing staff, physicians, patients, co-workers and other Health system customers and employees.



Education: Three or four years of formal education or training beyond high school or B.S. or B.A. degree.


Experience:  Five years of experience in an approved laboratory, two of which should have been in a supervisory, consultation or teaching capacity.  Training: Successful completion of an accredited clinical laboratory technologist training program in accordance with the State of Florida Department of Health, Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel Florida Administrative Code.

Licensure: Current licensure by the State of Florida Department of Health, Clinical Laboratory Supervisor required. (Immunohematology, Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Serology)

Other: Communication and interpersonal skills, general computer skills, ability to operate office equipment (phone, fax, copier).

Must be able to sit, stand and walk continually. 

Bend, reach frequently

Must have good vision and the ability to see color variances and fine detail

Must be able to handle a high degree of flexibility regarding schedules and job performance, and handle multiple priorities simultaneously

Required Lifting:

Up to 10 lbs - Continually, 11 to 50 lbs Continually, 51 to 75 lbs - Frequently

Pushing/Pulling (ability to push and pull.) Up to 10 lbs, 11 to 24 lbs Frequently, 25 to 50 lbs - Occasionally 

Environmental (may be exposed to.) Infectious Diseases, Chemical Agents, Dust, Fumes, Gases 

Hazardous or Moving Equipment and Loud Noises
